We never expected to find this gem in central Texas. After returning to Houston in 2021 from Seattle, WA, we looked for land to build that legacy on. A rare find, the Lone Oak Farm location is the next door property of one of our new neighbors in Houston. After looking all around Houston to the northeast, north, west and northwest, they made an introduction and 6 months later, we were the newest neighbors in Smithville, TX.
100 year old sycamore, ash, elm, pecan and oak trees dot the landscape.
Lone Oak Farm has over 1700 feet of riverfront along the Texas Colorado River. This river front or riparian area is a focus of our conservation efforts at Lone Oak as it has been deteriorated by livestock traffic and natural erosion. Our goal is to preserve the ecosystem along the river for wildlife that depends on it and minimize pollutants to the river.
Part learning experiment, part escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, we get our hands on lots of projects around the farm. Finding ways to reuse what was left over the previous owners' time on the land is a favorite of ours, and while it makes the work slower, the journey really is what it's all about.
